Open Source / DIY Wii Modchip

TCNISO has announced their plans to release an open source / open architecture Wii Modchip. The chip, among other things, will allow you to unlock Gamecube Homebrew on your Wii.

The Wiip is going to be available for a mere $20 retail (and that includes shipping!) and will appear in their online shop around 2/27/07.

Also, the schematics, code, and software will be available so you can make one yourself for less than $10!

From their site:
"This mod works by utilizing a cheap and simple microcontroller that communicates with the serial port of the Wii's hybrid DVD drive and overrides certain parts of the media's data stream.

The most important part of this project, is that it is open source! In addition to releasing the Wiip chip, on this page you will soon be able to download the PCB schematics, Wiip firmware and documentation! We hope by creating this project, other users will make modifications to our code for newer updates in the future (if needed)."

Now thats what I'm talking about, open source, and released at a fair price... I'll probably purchase one, both easier, and supporting the project. Though i really hope someone cracks through Wii home brew soon, and by the time i get a wii, it works with one of these _ _.

What are the DMS/D2A/D2B chipsets?

I know that European Wiis are much more locked-down that the Asian or US counterparts (no GC action-replay - why??) - are they driven by a different chipset (rather than just a different firmware), or is this something else?

If it does unlock the GC side of things, though, I'll be interested in giving it a try...

This looks like my kind of chip...and so cheap too! I can't wait to build my own mod chip!

BTW, AloneTrio from WAB has figured out how to make things work on the D2B chip.

Having an open source chip like this which is reflashable means it can be updated to support more drive types.

Also, since this open up an easy path for Gamecube homebrew, maybe something can be done in Gamecube mode which can be useful for unlocking wii mode.

You should see the news post maxconsole put up for this, I just ignored most the other marketing crap... but slandering lies about an open source chip for one of their advertisers... pathetic... there better be a huge public apology soon.

You should check-out the Wii article on Wikipedia.

Yeah, i may still get the wiip over the chiip... a chip soldiered to another chip with an obligatory led looks like the quality homebrew i'd do myself... oh wait, thats its point.

Are you just here to spam that link? I mean every post you make is just either what i assume was a joke (this thread) or an echo of what was already discussed, only really late. I mean I don't know exactly who you are, or what that site is, but it seems like you have an increasable will to trick us into going there.

Get a FREE WII in a few simple steps! That's right - you can get a FREE NINTENDO WII

This is old news now, but there's a much simpler and cheaper solution now called the WiiFree. It uses a simple PIC12F629 or similar depending on who ports the code, and it sports all the features of the best commercial chips now (version 2.25 as of this post)
