Restart the Opera Browser

If you navigate your Wii Browser to this image, it will restart Opera:

http://img1.imagefuse.com/anon/11683629302.jpg

The bottom bar goes away, a grey screen appears then it reloads the bar and jumps back to the homepage

Let the fun begin! Thanks to ThE_OnE for pointing this out.

WARNING:
Please be aware that if what I'm reading is true it is only a matter of time before someone tries to use this for malicious purposes. There are bad people in the world who would get their jollies by breaking people's consoles with bad code. Please be advised that you take sole responsibility for your actions if you decide to enter one of these URLs into your Wii Browser.

I will do my best to filter the good from the bad, but I do not run the servers these images are hosted on and have no control over what people put there.

Lastly, it should be noted that all of this is being done for Homebrew purposes. There are legions of developers who would like to develop software for the Nintendo Wii, but without a big rich video game company to back you it is extremely hard to get an official developers kit. If you are attempting to find information about hacking your Wii for the sole purpose of ripping off Nintendo and their software development partners, please find another site.

anybody tested a pc-game?

If I put a pc-game, with an autorun function, into my wii, the wii crashes and says that you need to reboot the system.

Maybe this is worth looking at?

Half the time I put a pc-game with autorun in my pc, it crashes ;)

lolz, at least the wii has the decency to say that you need to reboot :D

Now if only we can get a webpage that removes that bottom bar.

You contradict yourself. A lot. 100% turn after one sentence.

@johannes

How is the statement a contradiction? Most developers are not keen on having their work ripped off or ripping off other developers. They want to hack the Wii for the purpose of enabling homebrew and bringing their own products to the Wii.

Let me get this straight. So you're saying that you're hacking for the fun of it, to do your own stuff using the technology, and not to bootleg games.?

PS: What's the advantage of being able to restart the Opera Browser? Does it freeze or does the cache get filled and it needs to be reset?

kyelewis said...

Sdtektlv: thats exactly what he is saying and believe it or not, there is a large scene around legit homebrew developers who find this fun and interesting. You'd be better off taking your trolling elsewhere. However i agree with you on the technical point, this happens with a number of sites under a number of scenarios and i dont see a likely exploit.

A large section of the community have the gift of curiosity, they do things like hack the wii and write software for it to see if they can and because it sounds like a cool idea.
If that sounds stupid to you, hint, you are not a programmer.

LiquidIce said...

Yes, it is the curiosity that drives us homebrewers to do what we do. We have done it for every other console ever released, so why stop now?

Mostly I would like to see a LUA scripting engine for wii or some kind of thing like Klick and Play where novice programmers can easily make their own games by using simple programming concepts.

Another major thing I would like to see if a Wii Media Center that can play video without having to re-encode them. think xbox media center but for the Wii.

My statement above is saying that our intent on 'hacking the wii' is not to enable software pirates to go on a torrent spree and download games for free. This rips off developers and hurts the industry. It is inevitable that it will happen from someone else, but it will not be discussed here.

See..I'm not big on the programming aspect of the hacking of the Wii...mainly because I know very little, but getting things like HDloader or a way to backup games is very important to me...not because I like to steal games, but because I like to have perfect, pristine copies of games...that way, if anything ever happens to the backup I can just make another copy from the original...can't really do that if the original is busted.

Not only that, but I enjoy seeing what people who play with homebrew come up with...I remember seeing a higher quality texture and framerate version of Ocarina of Time...that was pretty cool. Oh! And this one time I saw the legend of zelda link's awakening(not a rom but rather a re-worked edition...like better graphics and a few added controls) for the ps2...it never got completed, but it was pretty sweet

liquidice is on the money with the media-centre thing, that's what I really want and have been looking into.
I'm encouraged by the fact that the wii's only been out a couple of months and people have already thought of using things through flash through the browser, certainly not ideal but it shows people are interested.

As well as homebrew though I gotta say I'd love it if ninty actually released their own proper media centre channel, can anyone think why they wouldn't want to do this?

SDtektiv said...

Ah. I understand now. I don't understand why I was thought to be trolling, but I was just asking and I'm glad to have my question answered.

nintendo's supposed to be releasing a version of the wii with dvd-playback software in japan later this year. since its software based i'm sure its possible for the rest of the world to get it with a firmware update or something similar

Unknown said...

Sorry, by media-centre I was talking about like network playback etc.
Ie play all the videos that are stored on my PC over the network with a nice interface in a consistent way.

Dvd playback would be nice too, but it's by no means the main deal for me.

don't know if it's usefull for you or no, but, i've successfully restart my wii opera by using a flash. the opera restart and display another page like (like the main menu)
if you think it could be usefull, grab my mail'

I don't think DVD playback would be possible without some modification of the DVD drive firmware since, as I remember, DVDs use this weird DRM that requires macro hardware or something in the drive.

?
